Former officials in the Afghan security institutions still own and misuse the armored vehicles which belong to the police and army forces, officials said Monday.
Without elaborating the exact number of police vehicles, a spokesman for the Ministry of Interior (MoI) told Ariana News that irresponsible people still own dozens of these vehicles.
“Former MoI officials are still using dozens of governmental armored vehicles and we are trying to collect these vehicles back,” Nusrat Rahimi, MoI Deputy Spokesman said.
The Ministry of Defense (MoD) also confirms that former military officials are abusing the army vehicles and equipment.
“Last month, we collected more than a hundred Ranger vehicles from the individuals, but I confirm that we still haven’t collected the vehicles completely,” Dawlat Waziri, MoD Spokesman said.
However, a number of military experts claim that the National Unity Government (NUG) does not have the ability to collect these vehicles from powerful individuals.
“The government does not have the power and ability to collect government vehicles from former officials,” Nesaruddin Baryalai, a military expert said.
“Since the last 17 years, all general, governors and officials have kept the government equipment and facilities with themselves,” Mohammada Gul Mujahid, a former military official said.
This comes days after the Minister of Interior, Wais Ahmad Barmak, publicly said irresponsible people are having light and heavy weapons in the country. He has also set a 45-day deadline for all those people who are possessing police vehicles to return them back.
